Rotorua Vacation Travel Guide

Australia & South Pacific

Rotorua, New Zealand is positioned amid some of the most stunning and volatile landscapes on earth, and has become a prime spot for adventurous souls. Its volcanic activity makes it a prime spot for hot springs and geysers, and previous geothermal movement has carved impressive landscapes out of the earth.

To truly experience the region’s history, your Rotorua tour should include a stop at Te Wairoa, also called the Buried Village. It was engulfed in soot and ash in 1886 when Mt. Tarawea erupted, and many of the artifacts and buildings that were buried have since been extracted and are on permanent display.

Test your nerves in the grade 5 rapids of the Kaituna River, or hop into a boat for a high-speed cruise through the winding gorges. Looking for an easier adventure? Mount Ngongotaha offers a spectacular view of Lake Rotorua, and you can take a gondola ride up to the top to get a 360-degree view of the area. It’s the perfect place to cap off your day of Rotorua sightseeing.

Round out your day with a soak in one of the many hot springs and plan out your next daring New Zealand adventure.
